FAA Grants Essential Permit to Electric ‘Flying Car’

In 2062, the futuristic world of The Jetsons depicted vehicles that could fly parents and their children to school. While we may not have reached that level of technology yet, Joby Aviation is making significant progress in the electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle (eVTOL) market. According to a report from TechCrunch, Joby Aviation has received Federal Aviation Administration approval to begin flight testing its new production prototype. This milestone keeps the company on track to deliver the first-ever eVTOL to the US Air Force next year. Joby plans to launch an electric air taxi service in 2025.

Joby stated in a press release that the aircraft will now undergo initial flight testing before being delivered to Edwards Air Force Base in California. The goal is to demonstrate a range of potential logistics use cases. This eVTOL has a flight range of up to 100 miles and can take off, land, and reach speeds of up to 200mph, as reported by New Scientist. It is designed to carry up to four passengers and is remarkably quiet during cruise mode, being 100 times quieter than conventional aircraft during takeoff and landing, according to Engadget.

This impressive prototype was built on Joby Aviation’s assembly line in California, in partnership with Toyota, its largest investor. Joby founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt expressed his excitement, stating, “This first aircraft coming off our pilot manufacturing line is a really, really big deal for the company.” The manufacturing line has the capacity to build a significant number of aircraft per year, and the company is collaborating with Toyota to establish a facility for larger-scale production of eVTOLs. With Toyota’s contribution and expertise, Joby Aviation is poised to make significant advancements in the eVTOL industry. (Read more flying car stories.)
