Expulsion of Russian Diplomats by Moldova Amid Spying Scandal

Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed Russia on Wednesday about the reduction of 45 embassy positions in Chisinau. This decision comes as a result of the deteriorating relations between the two countries, particularly due to Russia’s involvement in the conflict in neighboring Ukraine, as reported by the AP. The Ministry states that the reduction is a response to Russia’s “numerous unfriendly actions” that are unrelated to diplomatic responsibilities and its attempts to destabilize Moldova, which shares borders with Ukraine and Romania.

The decision to reduce the number of diplomats and administrative staff at the embassy follows a joint investigation by local media outlets, Insider and Jurnal TV. The investigation alleged that the satellite dishes and antennas installed on the roof of Russia’s embassy could potentially be used for spying. As a result, Russia’s ambassador to Moldova was summoned, and Moscow has been given until August 15th to comply with the decision. A total of 22 diplomats and 23 administrative staff will be affected.

Daniel Voda, the spokesperson for Moldova’s government, stated in a press briefing that limiting the number of accredited Russian diplomats in the country aims to prevent destabilization. He emphasized that employees who do not contribute to bilateral relations are unnecessary and excessive in their representation. On the other hand, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, called this move “another step in the destruction of bilateral relations” and warned that there will be a response to these “unjustified and unfriendly actions.” (Read more Moldova stories.)
