In a shocking incident, two attackers detonated a bomb outside a government building in Turkey just before Parliament’s reopening after a three-month summer break. Turkish Internal Affairs Minister Ali Yerlikaya released a statement on Sunday, condemning the act as a terrorist attack. The assailants arrived in a “light commercial vehicle” and carried out the bombing.
Tragically, one attacker died by suicide during the explosion, while the other was “neutralized” in a shoot-out with the police. Yerlikaya provided further details in his statement, stating, “At around 09.30, two terrorists arrived in front of the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security with a light commercial vehicle and carried out a bomb attack. One of the terrorists detonated himself, and the other was neutralized.”
Yerlikaya mentioned that two police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident. He later identified the officers as Alim Reis Demirel and Erkan Karataş and assured ongoing recovery for them.
The Minister of Justice, Yılmaz Tunç, has announced that an investigation into the attack will be conducted. “Regarding the treacherous attack in Ankara, our Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a judicial investigation. The investigation will be conducted comprehensively under the coordination of the Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor assigned to the incident,” Tunç stated.
