Approximately 100 young individuals engaged in a clash with riot police in Edinburgh. The confrontation involved the hurling of fireworks and petrol bombs directly at the officers.

Video footage captured from the Niddrie area exhibited police officers in riot gear forming a line while youths launched explosives at their feet.

Authorities were alerted to the Hay Avenue area at 16:40 following reports of “antisocial use of fireworks”.

Social media posts showcased onlookers observing the violent incident.

The videos depicted the police being bombarded with explosives as teenagers gathered on a green, some recording the altercation.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated, “The police response is ongoing to ensure the safety of the public and emergency service workers. Local road closures are currently in effect.

“Police officers on the scene are facing attacks involving fireworks, petrol bombs, and other projectiles. We request that the public avoids the area while the response is still underway.”

‘Disgraceful behavior’

Cammy Day, the leader of the City of Edinburgh Council, expressed his “appalled” reaction to the events in Niddrie.

He commented, “This reckless behavior poses a risk to lives, and like the majority of individuals in the community, I share their disappointment and upset regarding this disgraceful behavior.”

Russell Findlay, the Scottish Conservative justice spokesman, condemned the attacks on police officers as “cowardly, reckless, and dangerous.” He emphasized the need for adequate resources for Police Scotland to tackle these delinquents.

In 2018, Operation Moonbeam was established by Police Scotland to combat disorder on Bonfire Night.

Last year, a police vehicle was targeted with a Molotov cocktail in Niddrie, and motorcycle gangs raced through the area while fireworks were thrown at the ground.

On Halloween just last week, police were called to the Kirkton area of Dundee after young individuals ignited fireworks and started an illegal bonfire.
