Emma Beddington’s article on the weight of human hands (14 August) was a fascinating read. I’m curious to know how she determined the values of 409g and 426g for the right and left hands without resorting to amputation. The only method I can think of is partial immersion in water and the application of Archimedes’ principle, but that would require a very specialized balance.

I booked my car onto the 02:00 Dublin to Holyhead ferry, but ended up joining the queue for the 2:00pm sailing. I was embarrassed by my error at check-in, but the officer reassured me by saying, “No charge. Don’t worry, I’ll get you on. We’re not Ryanair.”
