Exploring the Insufficient Evidence: Why Charging McGregor Remains Elusive

After facing accusations of sexual assault following an NBA Finals game in Miami in June, Conor McGregor appears to have been cleared of any charges. According to a “closeout memo” cited by TMZ Sports, prosecutors have stated that there is insufficient evidence and conflicting witness testimony regarding the incident that took place on June 9. The alleged assault was said to have occurred after the Miami Heat lost to the Denver Nuggets at the Kaseya Center. The woman claimed that McGregor, with the help of NBA and venue security, forced her into a bathroom and sexually assaulted her.

The latest memo reveals that surveillance footage did show the woman and McGregor entering a bathroom together, where they stayed for approximately five minutes. They were then seen together inside a club within the arena until they separated around 12:40am. However, interviews conducted by prosecutors led them to drop the charges. One interview was with a male bathroom attendant who claimed to have seen the woman and McGregor enter a stall, but heard no signs of distress or non-consensual activity.

A friend of the accuser also told prosecutors that the woman never mentioned being attacked. In fact, she reportedly mentioned calling her mom to inform her that she had met McGregor. Further adding to the skepticism of prosecutors was the woman allegedly inquiring whether McGregor would be willing to settle or pay her off if she did not pursue charges.

Prosecutors concluded that “In light of the above facts and circumstances, the State would not be able to satisfy its burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.” The Irishman, who is now 35 years old, has not competed in a professional fight since July 2021 when he broke his leg during a match, according to Yahoo Sports. McGregor had been ineligible to compete this year due to his failure to register with the US Anti-Doping Agency. However, MMA Junkie reports that he has recently reentered the USADA testing pool and is rumored to have a fight scheduled against Michael Chandler. (Read more Conor McGregor stories.)
