Exploring the Climate Crisis: Evaluating Two New Movies’ Impact

This year has seen a series of natural disasters, from floods and earthquakes to wildfires and record-breaking heatwaves. Unfortunately, these events have become all too familiar, emphasizing the urgency of the climate crisis. It is timely, then, that two films showcased at this year’s New York Film Festival focus on this very issue. However, while the movies touch on important themes, they leave the viewer with mixed feelings.
One of the movies, “Evil Does Not Exist,” offers a introspective look at the present moment. Set in a rural Japanese community, the film showcases the residents’ sustainable way of life. Scenes of protagonist Takumi engaging in simple tasks like chopping firewood and collecting water from a spring convey a methodical and grounded atmosphere. However, the movie takes an unexpected twist in its final act, which diminishes its overall impact.
The other film, “Foe,” is a science fiction drama filled with various elements but fails to deliver a clear message. Set in a dystopian future ravaged by the climate crisis, the story follows a couple, Hen and Junior, as they struggle to survive in a deserted and drought-stricken part of the Midwest. When a representative from a government organization visits them, offering Junior a chance to live in space, the plot becomes convoluted and overloaded with multiple storylines. The film explores the idea of an AI replica of Junior being created, raising questions about the authenticity of human-robot relationships. However, the characters feel one-dimensional, and the dialogue lacks subtlety.
Both films present interesting concepts related to the climate crisis, but their execution leaves something to be desired. Perhaps this is because real-life events, such as the recent extreme weather events in New York City, make the problem all too clear and urgent. In a world where solutions are slow and ineffective, it is challenging for movies to provide fresh insights. Nevertheless, movies and other forms of media have a role to play in raising awareness and prompting discussions about these pressing issues.
