Exploring the Art of Taste with Architect and Designer Vincent Van Duysen

For many years, my personal style has been defined by a midnight-blue crewneck jumper. It serves as my go-to outfit and I have both cashmere and cotton versions, depending on the season. The cashmere ones, particularly from Prada and Loro Piana, provide a luxurious feeling against my skin. I also appreciate the comfort and style of cotton jumpers from Maison Margiela and Aspesi. The simplicity of this uniform gives me a sense of consistency and confidence in my appearance.

Recently, I purchased a striking sculpture by Isamu Noguchi called Kaki Persimmons. Made from hot-dipped galvanized steel, it adds a unique touch to my collection. I acquired it from White Cube in London, but I also enjoy visiting The Noguchi Museum on Long Island for inspiration and tranquility. It’s like a retreat from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

One place that holds great significance for me is Melides in Portugal. Located in the breathtaking region of Alentejo, it is surrounded by protected nature reserves. I have built my dream house there, Casa M, which harmonizes beautifully with the natural surroundings. The majority of the house is made of concrete, blending seamlessly with the dunes, and Brazilian wood adds warmth to the design. I deliberately keep the walls bare to fully appreciate the picturesque views through the windows. In the summer, the windows slide into the walls, transforming the house into an open-air pavilion.

I recently added a charcoal-grey blazer from Prada to my wardrobe. I’ve been a loyal fan of Prada’s Classic line for many years, and this piece was a worthwhile addition. Milan holds a special place in my heart because I studied there as a young architect in the ’80s. It feels like a second home to me, and I make sure to visit at least once a month.

My daily grooming routine revolves around shaving my head, so a razor and shaving cream are essentials for me. I have a specific fragrance called Original Vétiver by Creed that I wear and find invigorating. Additionally, I indulge in Awake & Lift Eye Patches by German brand MBR, as well as toner and facial moisturizer from Environ and iS Clinical. Taking care of my skin is important to me, and recently I received a recommendation from Julianne Moore to visit a skilled facialist named Fabricio Ormonde in New York.

One of the best souvenirs I’ve brought home is a crystal stone from Uruguay, given to me by my dear friend Eva Claessens, a talented Belgian painter. I’m a firm believer in the energetic properties of crystals, and this amethyst stone is not only visually appealing but also holds sentimental value. I proudly display it on a table behind my sofa in my living room in Antwerp. My collection of objects in this room includes Ted Muehling’s beautiful pieces, vintage ’20s bookends adorned with dachshund designs, and the ashes of my beloved dogs Georges, Loulou, and Gaston, housed in ceramic urns.

The best gift I have given recently is the Gustave table lamp, designed by me for Flos. This versatile lamp can be moved around and placed on various surfaces, such as a dining table or piano. It brings both functionality and elegance to any space. On the other hand, the best gift I have received was an Indian lingam stone from one of my closest friends for my birthday. Its unique colors and origin from a sacred river in India make it a cherished possession. I keep it next to my bed and have also acquired two more to display on the low table in my living room in Portugal.

When it comes to my refrigerator, you can always find a selection of berries, goat’s milk yogurt, rice milk, and fresh vegetables. I prioritize mindful eating and consume meat sparingly, opting for chicken or sea bass occasionally. A bottle of white wine, particularly the Pinot Grigio from Kornell Florian Brigl in Alto Adige, Italy, is a staple for me.

As for my style icon, I draw inspiration from the French decorator Jean-Michel Frank. His refined approach to interiors and fashion resonates with me. Frank had a unique ability to create exclusive spaces with a restrained aesthetic, emphasizing the essence of design. His design choices, including beautiful parchment walls, compact white armchairs, and straw marquetry side tables, are a testament to his unparalleled talent.

My life is enriched by my two dachshunds, Flora and Pablo. I have a deep affection for dogs in general, but these standard short-haired dachshunds hold a special place in my heart. Their intelligence, loyalty, and affection are truly remarkable. I have cherished this breed for over two decades, and they bring immense joy to my life.

Vintage furniture plays a significant role in my home, and I take pride in collecting pieces from various designers, including José Zanine Caldas and Pierre Jeanneret. My latest acquisition, a pair of c1929 armchairs by Eyre de Lanux, holds a special place in my collection. Made of mahogany and woven straw, these chairs exude timeless elegance and were a rare find from Sotheby’s. De Lanux’s innovative designs reflect her interesting life journey, and I find them both radical and captivating.

The most profound work of art that has impacted me is the practice of transcendental meditation. Discovering a personal teacher, Joachim Claes, in Antwerp three years ago has been transformational for me. This daily practice allows me to reset my body and mind, providing me with energy and alleviating stress. I firmly believe that 20 minutes of meditation equals six hours of restful sleep.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong is the best book I have read in the past year. This beautiful letter from a son to his illiterate mother resonated deeply with me as I had a strong bond with my late mother. As an only child, I treasure the memories and connection we shared.

Finally, my favorite building is the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut in Egypt, located near Luxor. I fell in love with its exquisite ancient architecture during my first visit to Egypt in my twenties. This temple possesses a modern quality as it seamlessly blends into its surroundings with its rhythm and colonnades. It greatly influenced the design of my house in Portugal.

Throughout the years, I have made it a habit to undergo a 10-day detox twice a year. Starting this tradition when I turned 50, it allows me to disconnect and recharge. I have visited various detox centers, such as Lanserhof Sylt, Sha in Spain, Palace Merano in Italy, and Kamalaya in Koh Samui, Thailand. I find solace in embarking on this journey alone, giving myself the space to rejuvenate.
