Experts Warn that Cuckoo Clocks are Going Cuckoo due to Climate Change

Climate Change is Affecting the Internal body Cycles of Cuckoos

  • Researchers have discovered that cuckoos are unable to adapt to earlier spring seasons
  • These birds arrive at their breeding grounds out of sync with their primary food source
  • This phenomenon could have serious implications for the survival of cuckoos

New research warns that cuckoos are struggling to adjust to climate change.

These birds spend their winters in central Africa and then migrate to western Europe to announce the arrival of spring.

However, their internal body cycles, which determine when they embark on their journey, are unable to adapt to the earlier arrival of spring.

As a result, they reach their breeding grounds in Europe out of sync with the peak availability of hairy caterpillars, their main source of food.

Dr. Chris Hewson, the lead author from the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), explains, “Many other species can adjust their internal clocks to leave their wintering grounds sooner, but this doesn’t seem to be an option for the UK Cuckoo population.”
