Experts urge mask-wearing as Covid deaths spike 57% in one week, marking the highest surge this year

Official figures reveal that there were more than 70 deaths attributed to coronavirus in a single week in England and Wales. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 74 individuals died from the virus in the seven days leading up to August 11. This marks a significant increase of 57.4% compared to the previous week, when only 47 deaths were recorded. Scientists have raised concerns that this surge in deaths could indicate the spread of a new variant and are calling for a reintroduction of pandemic mitigation measures such as mask wearing and improved ventilation. It is worth noting, however, that the number of deaths caused by the virus, despite being the highest this year, is still significantly lower than the peak in January, when there were 654 deaths in a week. These figures only include deaths where Covid was the main cause.

Prof. Lawrence Young from Warwick University warns that the rise in Covid-related deaths could be a sign of new virus variants spreading. Prof. Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia adds that the increase in deaths follows the rise in infections and hospitalizations observed in recent weeks. It is expected that the number of reported deaths will continue to increase for the next couple of weeks. Testing for Covid is no longer as widespread as it was earlier in the pandemic, but testing levels have remained stable in recent months. The arrival of the new Pirola variant has raised concerns about a potential new wave of infections.

Prof. Young emphasizes the need to closely monitor Covid infections as we enter the autumn and winter seasons. He suggests extending the autumn vaccination campaign to individuals below the age of 65 and raising public awareness about the ongoing risks of the virus. The recent increase in Covid deaths has coincided with the emergence of the Pirola variant, which has been reported in several countries. However, it is currently difficult to determine the true extent of Pirola’s spread due to limitations in variant tracking capabilities. While some experts caution against panic, it is essential to continue monitoring the situation closely. The number of Covid cases in England has nearly doubled in the past month, highlighting the need for continued vigilance.
