  • Astonishingly, a woman who fell overboard on a Royal Caribbean cruise was miraculously saved by rescue experts.
  • Plunging from the 10th deck of the liner into the ocean, the 42-year-old woman defied the odds by surviving the incredibly high fall.
  • Rescuers were able to locate her and complete the rescue operation within 45 minutes, further adding to the miracle of her survival.

Water rescue experts have described the survival of a passenger who went overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship as nothing short of miraculous. The 42-year-old woman miraculously survived a fall from the 10th deck, which is comparable in height to a 10-story apartment building, on the Mariner of the Seas vessel.

Rescuers managed to locate and rescue the woman within 45 minutes, defying the odds and further adding to the miraculous nature of the incident, according to Gerald Dworkin, founder of the aquatics safety training company Lifesaving Resources. He praised the woman’s survival, noting that factors such as trauma from the fall, exposure to cold water, and lack of landmarks in the open ocean usually lead to fatalities in such situations.

The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, fell overboard at approximately 5 p.m. while the cruise ship was over 30 miles off the coast of the Dominican Republic. The crew quickly launched a high-stakes rescue operation with the help of shouting passengers guiding them from the ship.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, most overboard incidents on cruise ships do not have successful rescue outcomes. From 2009 to 2019, there were 212 reported incidents, but only 48 resulted in successful rescues. Retired US Coast Guard commander Dave Smith commended the crew of the Royal Caribbean ship for their exceptional response and expertise, emphasizing the importance of having well-trained crew members on board.

Both Dworkin and Smith considered the woman’s survival to be a stroke of luck and a testament to the swift actions taken by the crew: “Absolutely miraculous and absolutely lucky that she’s survived,” said Dworkin. Smith added, “The ship’s crew deserves a big, big, well-done because that was remarkable.”
