Experts Issue New Warning: Artificial Intelligence Heightens Risk of Extinction

Leading figures in the tech industry, including high-level executives at Microsoft and Google, have issued a statement warning of the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) to humankind. The statement, posted on the Center for AI Safety’s website, called for the mitigation of AI risks to be considered a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. The move follows concerns about AI systems outsmarting humans and running out of control, intensified by the development of highly-capable AI chatbots. Over 1,000 researchers and technologists, including Elon Musk, previously called for a pause on AI development. The latest statement was endorsed by Microsoft’s chief technology and science officers and Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google’s AI research lab DeepMind. It was signed by experts in a range of areas including nuclear science, pandemics, climate change and writing.
