‘Expert Mechanic Reveals Top 5 Things to Avoid in an Automatic Car to Prevent Costly Damage’

The popular online mechanic Scotty Kilmer has shared his expert advice for drivers of automatic cars to avoid costly repairs and stay out of trouble.

Scotty, a mechanic with over 55 years of experience, regularly uploads videos to his YouTube channel, providing tips on how drivers can maximize the performance of their vehicles.

In one of his most popular videos, Scotty emphasizes the importance of changing the transmission fluid regularly for owners of vehicles with automatic gearboxes.

He firmly states, “Don’t fall for this misinformation if you have a newer car. They claim that under normal driving conditions, there’s no need to replace ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid).”

“It’s all nonsense,” Scotty continues. “I addressed this issue in a recent video. The manufacturer might say, ‘Oh, the fluid is good for the entire lifespan of the transmission.’ But guess what? That lifespan keeps decreasing because you don’t want dirty fluid causing damage.”

Scotty advises drivers to change the transmission fluid every 60,000 to 80,000 miles in order to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Modern automatic transmission systems are complex and expensive to replace, so it’s crucial to maintain them properly to improve performance and fuel efficiency.

According to Scotty, the cost of replacing a transmission in modern automatic cars can reach up to $5,000 (£4,000), further highlighting the importance of taking care of your transmission.

Later in the video, Scotty warns drivers never to shift gears from drive to reverse while the vehicle is in motion.

He adds, “Another thing you should never do is accidentally shift your car from drive to reverse while it’s still moving.”

“I’ve had a few young customers, teenagers learning to drive and messing around with their friends, make this mistake and completely destroy their transmissions.”

Lastly, Scotty advises drivers to change the gear out of drive if they have to idle for an extended period with the engine running.

He explains, “Now, let’s talk about what not to do with an automatic transmission car when you’re idling for a long time. Leaving it in drive while idling can lead to overheating inside the transmission.”

“If you’re going to be parked for a long time, simply turn off the car or at the very least, put it in park. In park, the torque converter isn’t exerting much power, so it won’t heat up as much as it would in drive.”
