A seasoned motor mechanic has issued a cautionary message to drivers about the potential dangers of speeding through puddles. Scotty Kilmer, an experienced mechanic with over five decades of experience, regularly shares insightful videos on social media platforms to assist drivers in steering clear of trouble. In one of his recent videos, Scotty emphasized the damage that can be caused by driving through standing water.
He elaborated, “First and foremost, it is crucial to prevent water from entering your engine’s air intake, as this can lead to severe engine damage. While this Lexus model has a well-designed air intake system positioned at the top, numerous cars have air intakes situated much lower, ranging from the bottom of the bumper to ground level.”
Although it may be momentarily thrilling to create a splash by traversing through a puddle, doing so frequently can result in serious problems. According to the AAA (American Automobile Association), if a significant amount of water enters the engine, it can become hydro-locked, causing certain components to seize completely. The association also warns that deep puddles might conceal sinkholes, causing additional damage.
Scotty also highlighted the need for extra caution among drivers of vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions when encountering puddles. He remarked, “In the case of vehicles with automatic transmissions, vents are present to accommodate the expansion and contraction of transmission fluid due to temperature changes. However, if the vehicle ventures into deep water, submerging the vent, water will be drawn into the transmission. Unfortunately, water can inflict substantial harm to automatic transmissions within a short time span.”
While it is sometimes unavoidable to drive through puddles, the AAA advises drivers to never overestimate their vehicle’s capabilities. According to the organization, the optimal approach for traversing puddles is to approach them slowly in order to prevent hydroplaning, a situation where the tires lose contact with the road surface. Drivers are also advised to stay informed about weather conditions through alerts and to heed any road signs suggesting alternative routes.
