Expert Debunks Panic: Bed Bugs Thriving in the UK, Not Migrating from France

According to an expert, bed bugs could already be infesting Britain, similar to the ongoing crisis in France. These blood-sucking insects have been found crawling on train seats and inside Charles-de-Gaulle Airport in Paris. Eurostar has been alerted to increase preventative treatment to avoid the spread of bed bugs. Microbiologist David Cain, founder of Bed Bugs Ltd, stated that London might already have a similar level of infestation to Paris. He mentioned that bed bugs are already present in buses, trains, cinemas, hospitals, and other public spaces. However, he noted that Parisians are more open about discussing the problem compared to people in the UK, creating an ideal environment for the spread of bed bugs. Cain estimated that around 5% of households in London have experienced bed bug infestations in the past two years. Pest-control company Rentokil reported a 65% increase in bed bug infestations, highlighting a growing issue in the UK. Natalie Bungay from the British Pest Control Association confirmed that the lack of travel during COVID-19 lockdowns contributed to the rise in bed bug call-outs. Cain stressed that the infestation in the UK would not be due to bugs traveling from France, but rather because they are already present. However, he admitted that bugs from Paris could potentially arrive in the UK. People traveling to France have complained about bed bug infestations in Airbnbs, hotels, cinemas, and restaurants. Paris’s deputy mayor has expressed concerns about the situation and demanded urgent action. Videos and memes mocking the infestation have circulated online. Bedbugs get their name from nesting in mattresses but can also be found in sofas, carpets, and furniture. They hide in small cracks and mainly feed at night. Though their bites are not harmful, they leave behind itchy red marks. Experts have warned about the increasing resistance of bed bugs to insecticides. Clive Boase, a pest management consultant, advised against putting belongings in hotel drawers to prevent the bugs from spreading. French officials have held crisis talks about the bed bug increase in the country, and there are fears that France’s outbreak could trigger a rise in cases in the UK. The National Institute for the Study and Control of Bedbugs in France has stated that this year’s situation is worse than previous years, with the bugs becoming more resistant to insecticides. It is advised to be cautious when traveling to areas with known infestations and to take preventive measures.
