Experience the Thrilling Roar of a 2000 Chevy Corvette Racing at Blazing Speeds of 172 MPH on Autobahn

Hey there, folks! It’s time to shake off our obsession with high horsepower. Nowadays, if a performance car doesn’t boast at least 500 hp, it’s considered mediocre. But let’s take a step back and appreciate what this 2000 Chevrolet Corvette brings to the table – tearing down the autobahn at 172 mph with less horsepower than many pickup trucks on the road today.

Featured in the newest AutoTopNL video, this “modified” C5 Corvette comes equipped with upgraded exhaust and claims to produce 344 hp. Interestingly, that’s actually one horsepower less than what these cars originally had from the factory. So, we suspect the video might have listed the stock output of the ‘Vette’s 5.7-liter V8 engine. Nevertheless, the sound it produces is wickedly fierce – raspy, burbly, with pops, backfires, and yes, even flames. Although it’s modified, if the changes are solely limited to the exhaust, it won’t have much additional power compared to a stock C5.

Observing this car in action confirms our theory. Back in 2000, Chevrolet claimed the standard Corvette had a top speed of 175 mph. This claim seems a bit outdated when we see cars with substantially more horsepower struggling to reach that mark today. However, this 3,300-pound two-seater, with its charming pop-up headlights and sleek profile, doesn’t require as much force to cut through the air. At full throttle, we witness this particular Corvette effortlessly touching that 175-mph speed.

In fact, it surpasses that mark according to the speedometer. The needle climbs to 295 kph before the driver eases off, though this achievement might be a tad optimistic. The digital readout on the left shows 277 kph, which is equivalent to 172 mph. No matter how you look at it, that’s quite impressive for a car packing less than 400 hp. And that brings us back to the notion of it being “modified.” Despite its modifications, this car doesn’t appear to have much more left in it beyond this speed. It aligns perfectly with Chevy’s official stats for 2000, showcasing how a nearly stock 23-year-old Corvette can keep up with various modern-day offerings from Mercedes-AMG and BMW M.

If an old Corvette with under 400 hp can achieve this, just imagine what the new ZR1, with twice the power, could do. We’re eagerly awaiting that top speed video!
