Artist Kate Colin brings creativity to V&A Dundee anniversary celebration
On its fifth anniversary, the V&A Dundee received a special gift from children all around Scotland. The country’s first design museum, which opened its doors on September 15, 2018, has been a popular attraction, drawing in 1.7 million visitors to date.
To commemorate this milestone, artist Kate Colin designed 500 geometric paper twists resembling candles, inspired by architect Kengo Kuma’s iconic building design. Children from local primary schools eagerly participated in this unique event, inserting their hopeful messages for the city within the paper sculptures.
These heartfelt messages were then placed in two water pools located outside the museum, creating a beautiful and symbolic display.
The celebrations are not limited to this event alone. The V&A Dundee is hosting a series of festivities throughout the weekend. Visitors can enjoy musical performances by talented artists such as Be Charlotte and Andrew Wasylyk, with free access to the Tartan exhibition. A variety of delectable street food options will be available on the plaza, ensuring a pleasant gastronomic experience for attendees.
Furthermore, a new report by BOP Consulting and Tialt reveals the significant economic impact of the V&A Dundee on Scotland. Since its inception, the museum has contributed an impressive £304 million to the Scottish economy.
Additional activities planned for Saturday include family-friendly events, free museum tours, and the unveiling of a new permanent exhibition on the architectural marvel that is the V&A Dundee, aptly titled “Stories From The Building”.
