Experience the Challenging Transformation of America’s Historic Ski Destination

One of the first-ever skiing destinations in North America will close its doors for the upcoming winter season, marking a nearly 90-year interruption. Outside reports that Black Mountain Ski Area, situated in Jackson, New Hampshire, will not be operational due to multiple circumstances. The Fichera family, who has owned the ski area since 1995, made the difficult decision to cease operations because of soaring energy costs, unpredictable weather, severe staffing shortages, and other challenges, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

The Ficheras expressed their gratitude to patrons and staffers and assured them of the ongoing refund process for those who had already purchased season tickets. The Black Mountain Ski Area, New Hampshire’s oldest, was established in 1934 when the first trail was etched into the mountain by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Despite the rise of corporate-owned ski resorts in the region, Fichera has maintained the independent ambiance at Black Mountain, ensuring its operation while continuously enhancing its snowmaking capabilities, as stated by New England Ski History.

Outside highlights the challenges faced by Black Mountain’s owners as a “mom-and-pop operation” amidst the emergence of large-scale resorts in the ski industry. The closure of one of New England and the United States’ oldest and historically rich ski areas saddened Facebook users, with one skier commenting, “I am very sad to see one of the oldest, and [one] with some of the best history in the ski industry in New England and the United States, close its doors.” The local community in Jackson also expressed disappointment, noting the impact it will have on the town’s economy.

According to a local pizzeria owner interviewed by WMUR, the closure of Black Mountain Ski Area will affect their business, as they used to deliver pizzas to the ski area every Friday night. However, proponents are hopeful that the closure is temporary, including Ski New Hampshire, a trade group mentioned in New England Ski Journal. In a recent statement, Ski New Hampshire expressed their respect for Black Mountain’s decision to close for the season and their anticipation of any future developments that may lead to its reopening.
