Expelled Members of ‘Tennessee Three’ Both Reclaim Their Seats

Tennessee Representatives Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, previously known as the “Tennessee Three,” have reclaimed their seats in the legislature after being involved in a gun control protest on the House floor. These young Black lawmakers were expelled from the GOP-dominated Statehouse but were reinstated on an interim basis by local officials. In a special election, they both defeated their opponents in districts that heavily favor Democrats, securing their positions fully once again.

“I believe that if we continue to run this race, there will be a series of victories,” Pearson said to his supporters on Thursday. He acknowledged the instrumental role of Black women and their organizing efforts in his success and the success of other politicians. This election took place as lawmakers prepare to reconvene in Nashville to address potential changes in the state’s gun control laws. Although Jones and Pearson’s re-election may not significantly impact the Republican supermajority in the Legislature, they are expected to strongly oppose certain policies put forth by their GOP colleagues.

The expulsions received national support, particularly with regards to Pearson and Jones’ campaign fundraising. Together, they raised over $2 million through approximately 70,400 campaign donations from across the country. This fundraising amount far exceeds the typical standards for Tennessee’s Republican legislative leaders and is virtually unheard of for two freshman Democrats in a superminority. On the other hand, more than 15 Republican lawmakers provided financial support to Jones’ Republican opponent, Laura Nelson. Nelson has raised over $34,000 for the race, while Pearson’s opponent, Jeff Johnston, raised less than $400.

These developments in Tennessee highlight the resilience and determination of Pearson and Jones, as well as the nationwide support they have garnered. As they continue their legislative work, they are poised to make their voices heard and stand up for their constituents’ interests.
