Pearson believes that the use of face coverings can alter the character and atmosphere of society, and she argues that the desire to return to normalcy is too often seen as reckless. In her view, it is actually excessive caution that poses a greater risk.
Pearson sees this debate as not just a matter of science, but also a cultural one: “I believe that in Labour strongholds and urban areas, people will continue to wear masks, pretending to have moral superiority over the rest of us. However, in areas outside of these metropolitan regions, mask-wearing will likely decline significantly.”
On the other hand, Pearson’s podcast co-host Liam Halligan predicts a scenario where those who advocate for continued mask use confront those who embrace a more free-thinking mindset: “I believe there will be conflict between the finger-waving classes and the more independent-minded individuals.” Halligan also criticizes the inconsistent guidance on face coverings across the four nations of the UK after July 19th, calling it an “absolute mess” and expressing a wish for clear stipulations.
