Exhibition Start Between Washington Commanders and Cleveland Browns Delayed by Storm and Lightning

The start of Friday night’s exhibition between the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Browns was delayed for over an hour due to nearby lightning and heavy rain.

At 7:22 p.m., the public address announcer advised fans in attendance to seek shelter, with a message on the scoreboards warning of approaching severe weather.

During the prolonged delay, Commanders coach Ron Rivera and several Washington players, including star defensive end Chase Young, came out of the locker room for updates.

Finally, at 8:30 p.m., officials gave the go-ahead for players to warm up for a second time. The Browns announced that kickoff is scheduled for 8:46 p.m.

The exhibition game was initially set to start at 7:38 p.m.

Prior to the delay, both the Commanders and Browns went through their pregame routines in a steady rain before retreating to their locker rooms. All personnel and fans were cleared from the field, seeking shelter on the concourses or finding seats beneath the upper deck to stay dry.

In a similar circumstance, the Browns’ preseason opener in the Hall of Fame game experienced a delay between the third and fourth quarters due to a power outage. Despite this, Cleveland emerged victorious with a 21-16 win over the New York Jets.
