The leading contenders within the Republican Party to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy as the next speaker of the House of Representatives have withdrawn from a televised debate scheduled to be aired on Fox News. This decision was made based on their agreement that participating in a debate on a conservative news network would not be advantageous. The information was revealed by two undisclosed sources to NBC News on Friday.

Republican Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, who were expected to participate in the debate, jointly concluded that opting out of the televised event would be more favorable for their campaign.

Additionally, Rep. Kevin Hern, who chairs the Republican Study Committee, announced his refusal to take part in the debate through a social media post on X — formerly known as Twitter. He emphasized the need for the Republican conference to engage in an internal discussion rather than resorting to a public platform.

CNBC reached out to Fox News for a comment, but no immediate response has been received.

According to a third undisclosed source, there was discontent among many members of the Republican caucus regarding the prospect of publicly discussing the party’s differences in a televised debate for prospective speakers. The source revealed that the party preferred resolving the matter behind closed doors.

The GOP caucus has scheduled a conference meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday to deliberate on the selection of a new speaker.

In a show of support, former President Donald Trump officially endorsed Jim Jordan for the position of speaker on Friday.

McCarthy’s removal as speaker is unprecedented in the history of the United States, as he is the first House speaker to be ousted through a no-confidence vote. The resolution to dethrone McCarthy received the support of seven other Republicans, who joined Florida Representative Matt Gaetz in voting against him. All attending Democrats voted against retaining McCarthy as the speaker.
