Exclusive: John Kelly Confirms President Trump’s Controversial Remarks on Veterans

John Kelly, the former chief of staff to President Donald Trump, confirmed multiple damaging stories about Trump in a statement to CNN on Monday. The statement is truly remarkable. Kelly characterized Trump as someone who is dishonest about his stance on various issues, including unborn life, women, minorities, evangelical Christians, Jews, and working men and women. He also said that Trump has no understanding of what America represents and stands for. The statement further affirmed previous reports about controversial remarks made by Trump regarding US service members and veterans.

“What can I add that has not already been said?” began the retired US Marine Corps general. Kelly described Trump as someone who believes that those who serve their country in uniform, get shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or endure years of torture as prisoners of war, are all “suckers” because they don’t gain any personal benefit. He mentioned that Trump didn’t want to be seen with military amputees because it didn’t look good for him. Kelly also recalled how Trump showed open contempt for a Gold Star family and referred to fallen heroes as “losers” during the 2016 campaign. He criticized Trump for not visiting their graves in France.

Kelly, whose own son died in combat in Afghanistan, didn’t stop there. He said Trump casually suggested that a devoted warrior who served the country for 40 years should be killed for treason, hoping for action to be taken. He described Trump as someone who admires autocrats and murderous dictators and has nothing but disdain for democratic institutions, the Constitution, and the rule of law. Kelly concluded his statement by saying, “There is nothing more that can be said. God help us.” The Guardian has reported that Kelly is believed to be the source of previous reports about Trump’s attitude towards the US military, although he had not confirmed it before.

In 2020, the Atlantic reported that Trump refused to visit a US war cemetery in France in 2018, referring to it as filled with “losers.” He also called US Marines killed in World War I “suckers” and questioned the motives of soldiers killed in combat at Arlington National Cemetery in 2017. According to the Guardian, Trump told Kelly that he didn’t want wounded veterans in a military parade because it didn’t look good for him. In response to Kelly’s statement, a Trump campaign representative said, “John Kelly has completely discredited himself with these debunked stories he made up because he did not serve his president well while working as chief of staff.” (Read more John Kelly stories.)
