Intriguing Story: Woman’s Giraffe Feces Jewelry Plans Rejected by Customs Agents
An Iowa woman’s unique plan to create jewelry from giraffe feces she collected in Kenya faced opposition from federal customs agents when she arrived at Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport on September 29.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the woman dutifully declared the small box of feces during her baggage inspection. It turns out she had successfully crafted a necklace from moose poop in the past, inspiring her to try the same with giraffe waste.
The customs authorities clarified that with the proper permits and inspections, giraffe poop can indeed be brought into the U.S. Minnesota Public Radio shared this useful information, also reporting that the woman will face no penalties as she had declared the feces and handed it over to Customs.
Unfortunately, the agency’s agriculture specialists had to dispose of the giraffe feces, emphasizing the potential dangers associated with bringing such matter into the country.
Customs and Border Protection’s Chicago field Director LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke expressed concern, stating, “There is a real danger with bringing fecal matter into the U.S. If this person had not declared these items and entered the country, it could have resulted in serious health issues due to potential diseases.”
The mentioned diseases include African swine fever, classical swine fever, Newcastle disease, foot-and-mouth disease, and swine vesicular disease, all of which are prevalent in Kenya.
