Whether your town is celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Columbus Day, or simply treating it as a regular Monday, the second Monday of October is a federal holiday. This means that government offices will be closed for the day.
While some states have chosen to recognize the mistreatment of Indigenous people and honor their history by calling the holiday Indigenous Peoples’ Day, 16 states still exclusively refer to it as Columbus Day, based on Pew Research.
Since the holiday is inconsistently celebrated, it’s important to know what’s open and closed on Monday, October 9:
CLOSED
As it is a federal holiday, government entities such as the DMV, libraries, and courts will be closed.
The U.S. Postal Service is closed as well, as Columbus Day is one of 11 holidays in which postal workers receive a paid day off and there is no regular mail delivery.
MODIFIED SERVICES
FedEx and FedEx Ground Economy are offering modified services, but their other services, including ground, freight, and home deliveries, will operate as usual.
UPS pickup and delivery services are operating, but UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries may experience a one-day delay due to the federal USPS holiday, according to UPS.
BANKS AND WALL STREET
Monday is a bank holiday, at least for the Federal Reserve’s banks and branches.
Most financial institutions follow the Federal Reserve System’s schedule, although there may be exceptions.
Bank of America, Citibank, Regions, and Wells Fargo have closed their branches, while Chase and TD Bank will remain open.
The holiday has a limited impact on Wall Street, as both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will operate as usual. However, the bond markets that trade U.S. government debt, along with the Fed, will be closed.
STORES AND RESTAURANTS
Most retailers and restaurants will be open, but it’s always a good idea to check ahead before heading out.
