A space black MacBook Pro may have stolen the spotlight this week, but Apple has just released a new version of AirTag firmware. Still not as exciting as the black aluminum laptop? That’s understandable. However, the latest AirTag firmware update awaits.
Today, the newest AirTag firmware has been released, bringing us to version 2.0.61, or build 2A61. This is an improvement from last year’s version 2.0.36.
While Apple hasn’t provided details on the changes made in this firmware update, it is likely that they address bug fixes and performance enhancements.
Improving AirTag performance involves addressing known issues and fine-tuning the firmware, especially now that the iPhone 15 and its counterparts have joined the market.
You can find the release notes for AirTag firmware updates here. Unlike iOS updates, the AirTag firmware update cannot be manually initiated. Apple gradually releases it over a span of several weeks.
As for a more significant update to the AirTag product line, Apple is expected to introduce second-generation hardware in 2025 at the earliest.
The introduction of the second-generation ultra-wideband chip in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9 provides a hint of what we can expect from AirTag 2 hardware. With the iPhone 15, precision finding is possible up to 60 meters, while the current AirTag is limited to about 10-15 meters.
