O’Hara and Moghbeli have an important mission ahead of them. They will be removing a crucial electronics box known as the Radio Frequency Group from a communications antenna system, as stated in an update released on Monday (Oct. 30) by NASA. The duo will also replace one of 12 trundle bearing assemblies on the station’s port solar alpha rotary joint, ensuring that the station’s solar arrays continue to track the sun.
This spacewalk was originally planned for Oct. 20, but due to the discovery of a coolant leak on a backup radiator of Russia’s Nauka module on Oct. 9, it was postponed. Nevertheless, the leak was identified and addressed during a spacewalk by two cosmonauts on Oct. 25. Roscosmos, Russia’s federal space agency, is currently investigating the cause of the leak and working towards a solution. Rest assured, the astronauts aboard the ISS are not in danger.
Historically, there have only been three all-woman spacewalks, all performed by NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir in 2019 and 2020. However, NASA has made it clear that this won’t be the last. Agency officials expressed excitement for future spacewalks, reinforcing the fact that women will continue to play a vital role in space exploration.
