Sept. 22 (UPI) — The Tampa Bay Rays are set to add talent to their already impressive lineup by promoting top prospect Junior Caminero to their big-league roster.
Confirmation of the move came from Caminero’s minor league team, the Montgomery Biscuits, on Thursday night. This season, Caminero showcased his skills with a .309 batting average, 20 home runs, and 62 RBIs in 81 games, representing the Rays’ Double-A affiliate.
Thought of as the No. 6 prospect in baseball, Caminero’s exceptional abilities were recognized by MLB Pipeline. Apart from his Double-A success, the talented third baseman/shortstop also excelled with a .356 batting average, 11 home runs, and 32 RBIs in 36 games for the Rays’ Advanced-A affiliate, the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Caminero has shown his prowess with a remarkable .316 batting average, 51 home runs, and 178 RBIs in 223 appearances across the minor leagues since 2021.
This move comes at a time when star shortstop Wander Franco is under investigation, resulting in his placement on administrative leave. During his hiatus, Taylor Walls, Osleivis Basabe, and Tristan Gray have been rotating at shortstop, while Isaac Paredes, Curtis Mead, and Jonathan Aranda have held it down at third base for the Rays.
In their upcoming game, the Rays (94-60) will face off against the Toronto Blue Jays (85-68) at 6:40 p.m. EDT on Friday in St. Petersburg, Fla. Currently 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Baltimore Orioles (95-58) in the American League East, the Rays maintain the top wild card playoff spot.
