Exciting News for Hollywood Writers: Ready to Resume Work at 12:01AM!

After almost five months, the screenwriters union has announced the end of their strike. The contract agreement between the union and the studios has been approved by board members, bringing Hollywood back to production. The governing boards of the eastern and western branches of the Writers Guild of America as well as their joint negotiating committee have all accepted the deal. The strike will officially end at 12:01 am on Wednesday, allowing writers to resume work. Late-night talk shows, which were the first to go dark during the strike, are expected to be among the first shows to resume.

The writers will still need to vote to ratify the contract themselves, but they are now free to work while the voting process takes place, as stated in an email from the Writers Guild. The writers have yet to receive any details on the deal, but their leaders have called it “exceptional.” The voting will take place between October 2 and 9. Hollywood actors are still on strike with no talks scheduled, but there is newfound optimism among those who participated in the picketing on Tuesday, the first time since the tentative deal was reached on Sunday night.

While writers’ picket lines had been suspended, they were encouraged to show solidarity with actors, resulting in many writers joining the picket lines on Tuesday. This included Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, who picketed alongside ER actor Noah Wyle, as he has done throughout the strike. Weiner expressed appreciation for the actors, stating, “We would never have had the leverage we had if SAG had not gone out. They were very brave to do it.” Striking actors also voted to potentially expand the strike to include the video game market, which could add pressure on Hollywood studios to negotiate a deal with the performers who contribute voices and stunts for games.
