At a young age of eleven, she achieved the feat of having a story published in the now-defunct Toronto Telegram newspaper. Since then, McIntosh has cultivated her writing career by contributing to antique car and hot-rod car club magazines. In 1987, she became a columnist for Old Autos, an Ontario-based newspaper dedicated to the antique car hobby. Simultaneously, she joined the Toronto Star’s newly-launched Wheels section in 1986, making her one of its regular writers. Her role at Wheels expanded to include “new vehicle reviewer” in 1999. She remained with Wheels until they discontinued hiring freelance writers, promptly joining Driving.ca the next day.
In addition to her work with Driving.ca, Jil McIntosh contributes to industry-focused publications such as Automotive News Canada and Autosphere. Her automotive expertise has been showcased in various renowned publications, including Cars & Parts, Street Rodder, Canadian Hot Rods, AutoTrader, Sharp, Taxi News, Maclean’s, The Chicago Tribune, Forbes Wheels, Canadian Driver, Sympatico Autos, and Reader’s Digest.
