Is Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard moving to a new court?
The 29-year-old athlete from Westmount, Quebec, is joining a professional pickleball tour in 2024 — although details about the move remain scarce.
The Carvana Professional Pickleball Tour announced this development on Thursday, hailing it as “one of the biggest signings of the year.”
Bouchard shared the news on her Instagram account, but did not provide further information about her tennis career or the implications of the move. Global News attempted to contact Bouchard but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
Bouchard, who previously held a career-high ranking of No. 5 and competed at Wimbledon in 2014, currently sits at 215th on the WTA Tour. She was last seen on the tennis court just last month.
The Montreal-born player was eliminated in the qualifying round at the National Bank Open in her hometown in early August. A few weeks later, she lost to Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the second round of qualifying at the U.S. Open.
The news of Bouchard joining a pickleball tournament has caused quite a stir among Montreal’s pickleball enthusiasts.
Mitchell White, the lead volunteer for the pickleball courts in Côte Saint-Luc, described the development as “very fun and exciting.” He believes Bouchard’s presence will further elevate the sport’s popularity.
“I think this will just keep bringing it to the next level,” White said, expressing confidence in the continued rise of pickleball’s popularity.
The move also caught Dawid Jagiello, the general manager and part-owner of the Atwater Club, off guard. He had recently watched Bouchard play tennis in a tournament.
“She’s an athlete, so I’m sure she will pick it up quite fast,” he said, expressing his club’s willingness to welcome her to their pickleball courts.
