‘Excessive’ Costs of Staycation Accused of Being ‘Exorbitant’

According to a survey commissioned by Aviva Insurance, inflation in airfares, heatwaves, and unpredictable weather are not deterring holidaymakers from traveling abroad.

Despite the recent increase in air travel costs, 55% of Irish holidaymakers still plan to travel abroad this year.

Only a quarter of respondents have decided to halt their overseas travel plans due to high airfares.

A survey conducted by iReach Insights on behalf of Aviva Insurance Ireland, involving 1,000 participants nationwide, revealed that there is a widespread belief that Ireland does not provide good value for money as a staycation destination.

Nearly half of Irish people consider holidaying in Ireland to be “extortionate.”

Overall, 70% of respondents believe that Ireland cannot compete with the costs of traveling abroad.

Billy Shannon from Aviva stated, “While rising air travel costs may discourage some individuals due to affordability, our survey suggests that there won’t be a significant decrease in demand this year.”

It remains unclear whether people are opting for overseas travel for the sun and a change of scenery, or simply because they believe it offers better value compared to holidaying in Ireland.

Mr. Shannon added, “However, it is evident from this research that a significant portion of the population believes that holidaying in Ireland is not cost-effective.”

Parents with dependent children are more likely to perceive Ireland as excessively expensive.

Even the possibility of extreme weather conditions and record-breaking heatwaves during the summer months is not deterring vacationers, as revealed by the Aviva survey.

40% of respondents stated that they do not consider the risk of extreme weather abroad when making their travel plans.

Dubliners are the most likely to travel regardless of the weather conditions.

Only a quarter of the respondents would modify their travel plans due to the potential for a heatwave.

Mr. Shannon remarked, “Households are now more cost-conscious than ever, and it seems that people want to ensure they are getting value for their money when spending it.”
