Excellent Army Assistance Offered as London Police Decline Armed Duty

London police have declined the offer from the British army to provide soldiers as assistance, following more than 100 officers refusing to take part in armed patrols over the weekend. According to CBS News, this action comes as a response to a colleague being charged with murder in the shooting death of Chris Kaba, an unarmed 24-year-old man, last September. London Police Commissioner Mark Rowley addressed the concerns of firearms officers in an open letter released on Sunday, stating that they fear facing prolonged legal proceedings that would impact their personal well-being and that of their families, despite adhering to their given tactics and training.

Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the firearms officer responsible for shooting Kaba. The Voice of America reports that it is uncommon for a murder charge to be filed against a UK police officer. Additionally, it is rare for police to discharge their firearms, as evidenced by only 10 firearms operations involving officer firing between March 2022 and March 2023 in England and Wales. Less than 10% of London officers carry firearms, which is granted only after rigorous training. Over the weekend, more than 100 firearms officers, as reported by the BBC, decided to stop carrying their weapons. However, police officials have informed the Defense Ministry that they now have enough officers willing to bear arms, and the soldiers would have taken on support roles instead.
