Benjamin Netanyahu’s continued role as Prime Minister of Israel is a matter of perplexity and concern. As the leader, his primary duty was to prevent such a catastrophic outcome, yet he has failed miserably, resulting in an unprecedented number of civilian casualties. Despite promising security, his actions have only caused immense suffering and tears.
If Netanyahu possesses any integrity or shame, he should not wait for the inevitable inquests but should immediately resign from his position. His political career has consistently been marked by fear and confrontation, and his response to the recent Hamas attack only reinforces this pattern. Rather than seeking peaceful resolutions, he pledges further violence and escalation. He irresponsibly warns Gazans to leave their homes, despite them being trapped on all sides. This irrational and inhumane policy is not sustainable, and Netanyahu’s continued presence in power will only exacerbate the situation.
Many Israelis recognize the detrimental impact of Netanyahu’s leadership, even if he and his far-right coalition allies refuse to acknowledge it. Even the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper criticizes his government for deliberately ignoring the existence and rights of Palestinians, leading to an inevitable collision. The explosion of Palestinian anger, culminating in the recent attack, was foreseeable given the daily violence in the West Bank and the provocative actions of Israeli settlers backed by extremist ministers.
As the postmortems begin, Netanyahu may attempt to shift blame onto military and intelligence chiefs, but ultimately, the responsibility for security lies with the prime minister, not physical barriers. Informal talks are already underway regarding the establishment of a national unity government to address this crisis, and it is crucial that Netanyahu is not part of this government. He is a liability and embarrassment to Israel and its allies.
However, it is essential to address the immediate issue without obfuscation—there is no justification for the recent Hamas attack. Their actions are murderous and inexcusable, regardless of any grievances they may claim to have. Hamas seeks to inflict pain and challenge Israel to respond ruthlessly, tarnishing the Palestinian cause in the process. Their strategy may have achieved attention, but it does a disservice to their cause.
Israel now finds itself in an extraordinarily threatening and complex security situation. Its options in dealing with Gaza are all disadvantageous. Negotiations with Hamas at this point are repugnant, and continuing aerial assaults risk further civilian deaths and international condemnation. Tightening the blockade will lead to more human suffering, and a ground invasion risks protracted urban warfare and perpetuated violence.
Ultimately, a ceasefire and talks are necessary, and the international community must step up after years of neglecting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. To prevent a wider war and maintain stability in the region, world leaders must abandon the hands-off approach and actively engage in finding a lasting solution. This includes supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel and promoting peaceful coexistence.
