As esteemed members of Cambridge University, writing in our personal capacities, we would like to express our deep concern regarding the future of our universities and our country if Britain decides to leave the EU. British universities are internationally recognized as leading centers of learning and research. Much of this success can be attributed to the funding provided by the EU. In the field of sciences, we have 22 percent of the European Research Council grantees, despite being only 12 percent of the EU’s total population. Without EU support, approximately 30 percent of major interdisciplinary projects at Cambridge in arts and humanities would be at risk. The government would not be able to fill this funding gap if we were to leave the EU. The access to EU scholarships is immensely beneficial for our young people. The exchange of ideas and collaboration facilitated by the free movement of academics within Europe plays a critical role in ensuring the quality of research. In the modern research landscape, successful research depends on accessing larger networks and populations beyond the capabilities of Britain alone. Key issues such as security, energy, environmental sustainability, health, and the globalized economy transcend national borders. If we are to maintain our position as leaders in research and innovation, particularly in light of the growing academic centers in America and Asia, we must combine our research resources within a reformed EU. Our future economic growth hinges on it.
