Estonia has made history by becoming the first Baltic country to legalize same-sex marriage. This significant decision was made by the country’s parliament, with a majority vote of 55 to 34 in favor of allowing same-sex couples to marry. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas expressed her pride in a Tweet, stating that Estonia has joined other Nordic nations in achieving marriage equality. The decision will be implemented from 2024, and it marks a step towards a society where everyone’s rights are respected and love is free.

Prime Minister Kallas further emphasized the importance of this decision, stating that it does not take anything away from anyone but rather gives something significant to many. It reflects a caring and respectful society that values the right for everyone to marry the person they love and commit to. Notably, same-sex relationships have already had legal protection in Estonia since 2016. The Family Law Act, effective from January 2024, also allows same-sex couples to adopt children. Critics who lean towards traditional family models have expressed concern, but a majority of Estonians surveyed (53%) support the legalization of same-sex marriage. Countries like Norway and Sweden have already recognized same-sex marriage, and in May, a Japanese court ruled that the lack of recognition for same-sex marriages in Japan is unconstitutional.
