Baidu, the Chinese technology giant, has introduced its own chatbot called Ernie Bot, aimed at rivaling OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Baidu, its artificial intelligence model outperforms ChatGPT in several key areas. The Ernie Bot has been undergoing public testing in China since its announcement in March. Based on Baidu’s foundational AI model, Ernie, which is trained on massive amounts of data, the latest iteration, Ernie 3.5, has surpassed ChatGPT and OpenAI’s GPT 4 in benchmark tests and Chinese language evaluations. This highlights the intense competition in the generative AI space, with US and Chinese tech giants constantly pushing the boundaries. Baidu’s Ernie 3.5 also excelled in tests based on standard admission exams and qualification exams in Chinese. However, it fell behind GPT 4 in English. Baidu aims to lead the technology race against rivals like Alibaba. Baidu’s CTO, Haifeng Wang, emphasized the significant enhancements achieved in Ernie 3.5 in terms of efficacy, functionality, and performance, including creative writing, Q&A, reasoning, code generation, training and inference performance. The latest model also offers access to “plugins,” allowing integration with various apps, such as Baidu’s search feature.
