Ever since his arrival at Manchester City in June 2022, Erling Haaland has been setting goal-scoring records. During the match against Liverpool, he accomplished another milestone by scoring his 50th league goal for the reigning Premier League champion.

Haaland’s feat makes him the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 50 goals in just 48 games, surpassing the previous record set by Andrew Cole, who achieved the milestone in 65 games while playing for Manchester United and Newcastle United.

Haaland’s goal, scored in the 27th minute, gave the host City an early lead, which they maintained until the 80th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold leveled for Liverpool.

“We played really well, excellent performance,” City manager Pep Guardiola told BBC Sport. “I don’t have anything to complain or regret about how proud I am of the team.”

Haaland’s goal was a result of his clever positioning between Liverpool’s center-backs and a precise shot that beat goalkeeper Allison Becker into the bottom-right corner at a crucial time when Liverpool was taking control.

Despite the anticipation, the game didn’t live up to the previous high-caliber encounters between the two dominant teams of the era, as both teams failed to perform at their best.

City’s apparent second goal was disallowed after a goalline foul on Alisson by Manuel Akanji, leaving the scoreline unchanged.

With 10 minutes remaining, Liverpool’s right-back Alexander-Arnold scored a crucial goal, delivering a hard-earned point for his team after being assisted by Mohamed Salah.

“This is a really tough place to come and it is a not a coincidence they have won I don’t know how many in a row at home. They are a super team,” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“Can we play better? Definitely and we will… It is a good point for us and I am absolutely fine.”

The result ended City’s perfect record at home in 2023, a run which stretched to 23 games, and allowed Arsenal to leapfrog both teams in the table after the Gunners beat Brentford later in the day.
