Apple has recently released a security update to address a newly discovered vulnerability that allowed the installation of Pegasus spyware on one of its devices. The vulnerability was detected by The Citizen Lab at The University of Toronto’s Munk School during an examination of the device belonging to an individual associated with a civil society organization based in Washington, D.C.
In a news release, The Citizen Lab emphasized that attackers could compromise iPhones running the latest version of iOS without requiring any interaction from the phone’s owner. They are urging all users to promptly install the update. The group also commended Apple for their swift response and patch cycle, acknowledging the victim and their organization for their collaboration and assistance.
This discovery serves as another example of the targeted nature of highly sophisticated exploits and mercenary spyware aimed at civil society. The Pegasus spyware, developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, has been employed by foreign governments to surveil activists, dissidents, journalists, and other individuals.
