Enrique Tarrio, Leader of the Proud Boys, to Face Sentencing in Seditious Conspiracy Case

Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio is facing sentencing on Wednesday for multiple felony charges related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol assault, including seditious conspiracy. Tarrio, along with Joseph Biggs, Ethan Nordean, and Zachary Rehl, was found guilty of seditious conspiracy, the most serious charge in the Justice Department’s investigation.

Prosecutors have asked Judge Timothy Kelly to impose a 33-year prison sentence on Tarrio and Biggs, alleging that they were central figures in the Capitol breach. The Justice Department has argued that Tarrio and his co-defendants aimed to incite a “revolution” and should be punished accordingly.

Although Tarrio was not physically present at the Capitol on January 6, prosecutors claim that he was the primary organizer of the conspiracy and used his influence to endorse and promote violence. However, Tarrio’s defense attorneys have refuted these allegations, calling the terrorism recommendation arbitrary and unnecessary.

During the trial, evidence was presented that demonstrated Tarrio’s involvement in planning for the Proud Boys’ protest on January 6 and his advocacy for a “civil war.” Tarrio’s co-defendants, Nordean, Rehl, Biggs, and Pezzola, allegedly gathered with over 100 Proud Boys near the Washington Monument before marching to the Capitol, where they were said to have participated in and encouraged the violence.

Tarrio’s defense argued that his statements were protected under the First Amendment, but the jury ultimately convicted him of seditious conspiracy and other charges. This sentencing follows the recent sentencing of Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers, who received 18 years in prison for his involvement in the Capitol assault.

Tarrio’s co-defendants will also be sentenced this week. The Justice Department plans to appeal Rhodes’ sentence, and many Oath Keepers defendants, including Rhodes, are appealing their convictions.
