Enrique Tarrio, Former Proud Boys Chairman, Sentenced to 22 Years in Prison for Capitol Attack

Enrique Tarrio, the former national chairman of the Proud Boys, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for his involvement in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Tarrio was among six Proud Boys leaders charged with conspiring to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election results in Congress. His sentence is the longest among the group. Tarrio’s sentencing hearing was postponed due to Judge Timothy Kelly falling ill, and prosecutors had initially requested a 33-year sentence. However, Tarrio’s attorneys pleaded for a maximum of 15 years. The other defendants in the Proud Boys case received shorter prison terms than what the government requested. Ethan Nordean, head of the Seattle chapter, and Stewart Rhodes, Founder of the Oath Keepers, received the longest sentences with 18 years. Tarrio, Nordean, Joseph Biggs, and Zachary Rehl were convicted of seditious conspiracy and other crimes in May. Dominic Pezzola was acquitted on the conspiracy charge but found guilty of assaulting officers and robbery involving government property. Tarrio was also convicted of obstructing an official proceeding, conspiracy, obstruction of law enforcement, and destruction of government property.

Tarrio was not present at the Capitol riot as he had been arrested earlier for setting fire to a Black Lives Matter banner. Prosecutors allege that from a hotel outside D.C., Tarrio instructed the Proud Boys to attack the Capitol. However, his attorneys assert that he had no contact with the organization during the riot and attribute the planning to Nordean and Biggs. Despite the lengthy sentences, extremism experts believe that the Proud Boys will continue their activities, as they remain active in organizing and recruiting. The group has experienced growth in membership and chapters since January 6, focusing on local activism regarding issues such as LGBTQ and abortion rights.
