In the West Philippine Sea, the Philippines and its coast guard continue to face harassment from the Chinese Coast Guard, despite the favorable ruling of the international Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016. It seems that the Chinese government stubbornly persists in its claims for maritime expansion in these waters.
Month after month, their maritime activities are expanding and intensifying to the point where they jeopardize our coast guard’s resupply operations. Their aggressive actions towards our troops are a clear demonstration of their belief in their supremacy over the territorial dispute, highlighting our inability to defend our own waters.
The best course of action for our country is to strengthen our relationships with other Southeast Asian nations, as well as our alliances with Japan and the United States, in the hopes that they will stand by us and defend the Philippines when our worst fears become a reality.
