Enhancing Science and Technology Programs in Schools to Cultivate Future Generations

As a graduate of the Tanza Child Development Centre (TCDC), I was delighted to come across the article titled “Teach students to invent and innovate through S&T programs” (Letters, 6/9/23). During my childhood, technology was not a major part of my family’s life, and I found myself more inclined towards reading books and literature rather than engaging in discussions about famous scientists or technology-related topics. However, my perspective changed when I joined TCDC and got the opportunity to participate in their robotics program, which involved creating robots from preschool through senior high school.

Robotics opened my eyes to the world of science and technology. Through this program and the annual Robofest, TCDC equipped us students for the future. The hands-on robot-making activities made us feel empowered and instilled in us a sense of contribution to our country’s technological advancement. This experience completely transformed my lukewarm relationship with science and technology, prompting me to pursue the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) strand in senior high school at the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) Manila, where I am set to graduate this month.

I am proud to share that my teammates and I represented TIP Manila in the Metafocus 2022 Inter-Senior High School Competition for STEM Students organized by the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (IECEP), and secured the first runner-up position. Our project, called “BuzzBuzz,” addressed the issue of clean water and sanitation by creating a device capable of eliminating pollutants like micro-bacteria from polluted water sources. We envisioned it being used in areas where underprivileged communities lack access to safe and clean water.

TCDC played a vital role in laying the foundation for my technological knowledge and skills. The school provided comprehensive training in programming and circuitry, which greatly contributed to our success in the Metafocus competition. It is essential for schools to prioritize technological education to prepare the next generation for our ever-evolving society. By introducing students to the realities of our world at an early age, we can empower them to contribute to our country’s technological development, just as I intend to do after graduating from college.

As a young woman immersed in science and technology in this digital age, I strongly believe that a robust S&T program is crucial in schools. As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, it is our responsibility to prepare the younger generation for this digital era.
