Enhancing Education: Leveraging AI in Schools for Student Success

For three years, our kids and teachers grappled with remote learning via Zoom. But now they face a brand-new challenge: embracing artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom. In 2023, students will gain access to generative AI, an innovative tool that allows them to input a few words and quickly generate responses for their essays and homework. This advancement in technology has the potential to revolutionize the speed and depth of learning.

AI should be viewed as an enhancement, not a replacement, for human knowledge. Just as calculators didn’t eliminate the need for arithmetic skills and Wikipedia didn’t eradicate critical thinking, AI will augment the rich tapestry of human understanding. Like calculators, generative AI can expedite complex calculations and promote learning at an earlier age. However, skepticism is inevitable, as every transformative tool, from encyclopedias to calculators and the vast world of the internet, has faced its fair share of doubters.

As a parent, educator, and technologist, I have some valuable tips to share.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

It’s crucial to adapt our teaching methods to accommodate this new technology. When assigning work to my students, I ensure there is more depth than simply regurgitating information. Assignments must involve persuasion or critical analysis – skills that robots lack. Engaging in discussions and conducting voice examinations further develop students’ understanding and abilities, preventing them from becoming walking encyclopedias.

2023 is not just another academic year; it’s a resounding call for us all to learn how and where AI tools may fit into our lives.

In my classroom, I allow students to utilize ChatGPT or Google’s Bard. However, I make it clear that if they solely rely on generative AI platforms, their grades will reflect it. This mirrors the situation in previous years when students merely conducted web searches for their reports, expecting an “A.” AI can spark ideas, but it’s the students’ responsibility to nurture and expand upon them. They must demonstrate mastery of the information and communicate it in a compelling and critical manner – areas where robots fall short.

Fortunately, it’s easy for the human eye to discern when an assignment, essay, or article has been written with generative AI. The writing appears impersonal and lacks the student’s unique voice, exposing the “intelligence” of AI as truly artificial. Authentic student work pulsates with life, individual quirks, and delightful imperfections that showcase human creativity. I also require my students to disclose if they used AI and how they utilized it.

The lesson here is that while AI can provide structure, a starting point, or a framework, the true essence of communication lies in a human’s unique ability for personal interpretation, critical thinking, and genuine understanding.

However, it’s not all cautionary tales. AI-powered platforms like Khan Academy have proven invaluable when teaching complex subjects. These tools offer tailored lessons, respecting and nurturing each student’s unique learning curve – a level of customization previously unimaginable in a traditional classroom setting.

The benefits of AI are undeniable. By integrating AI tools into our curriculum, we empower our students to harness technological advancements alongside their own judgment, ethics, and creativity.
