Enhance Your F-150 with Ford’s Innovative 6×6 Kit – Exclusive Patent Unveiled!

It seems that Ford is looking to expand the work capacity of its pickup trucks with a new bolt-on 6×6 kit. While the official purpose of this kit is to provide extra functionality, we all know that many buyers will be using it to show off their vehicles. The popularity of similar conversions done by Hennessey has certainly influenced Ford’s decision to develop this kit.

The patent for this kit was filed in April, and it describes a “payload extension kit that is attachable to the chassis non-permanently.” This suggests that the kit can be installed on the truck after it has been assembled at a Ford plant, without requiring major changes to the production line. However, it’s important to note that the kit cannot be easily taken off and reinstalled at will.

The patent further explains that the payload extension includes a fifth and sixth wheel attached to a subframe extension, creating a second pair of rear wheels. This setup should not be confused with a dually configuration, which typically involves four rear wheels on a single axle. The patent image provided offers a clearer visualization of how the wheels are positioned.

Regarding the powertrain, it is still unclear whether the truck’s existing setup will continue to power all the wheels, especially considering that the stock axle still has a rear-end pumpkin. However, advancements in technology would allow for the addition of an electric motor on the new axle, as suggested by the patent.

It’s important to note that not all patents filed by car companies actually make it into production. Whether or not this kit becomes a reality remains to be seen. However, if it does, Ford could potentially profit from these conversions through its parts department, competing with aftermarket companies like Hennessey.
