Energy industry: British Gas introduces reduced electricity prices on Sundays for its summer scheme

British Gas is introducing a unique opportunity for its customers to save money on electricity bills this summer. By participating in the PeakSave scheme, customers can enjoy half-price electricity every Sunday between 11am and 4pm from now until September 24th. However, in order to take advantage of this offer, customers must carefully plan their activities such as cooking, housework, and video gaming during these designated hours.

During the winter months, approximately 200,000 British Gas customers already signed up for the PeakSave scheme, which offers discounted electricity at specific times. The energy supplier is hoping to convince another 200,000 customers to join the scheme this summer and further reduce their energy costs.

By participating in the PeakSave scheme, households have the potential to save a total of £3 million this summer, which is equivalent to almost £30 per household. However, these savings require committing several hours of housework during the designated half-price hours. For example, a family aiming to save £29.25 over the next 14 Sundays would need to use their electric oven for two hours, as well as an electric hob, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, and tumble dryer for a full hour each. Additionally, within the five-hour window, they should play video games for two hours, make 10 cups of tea or coffee, and watch TV.

British Gas notes that households already consume more energy on Sundays compared to other days of the week. A recent survey revealed that two-fifths of their customers use more electricity on Sundays to carry out household chores, cook Sunday roasts, and catch up on TV.

Catherine O’Kelly, the managing director of British Gas Energy, believes that this scheme plays a vital role in managing peaks in electricity demand, ultimately contributing to a safer, more sustainable supply across the UK. By encouraging customers to use electricity when overall demand is low due to the weekend break for offices and factories, the UK can reduce the strain on the electricity grid.

Experts suggest that reducing peaks in electricity demand could save billions of pounds by avoiding unnecessary investments in new generation and grid infrastructure. Moreover, this initiative can increase the use of green electricity and help reduce carbon emissions in the UK.
