Energy Boosts S&P/TSX Composite, U.S. Markets Follow Suit in Late Morning Trading on Monday

Canada’s main stock index experienced a boost in late-morning trading, thanks to the strength of energy stocks. This positive trend was mirrored in the U.S. stock markets.

The S&P/TSX composite index rose by 45.31 points to reach 20,592.82.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average increased by 192.15 points to reach 35,419.84. The S&P 500 index rose by 19.89 points to 4,556.23, while the Nasdaq composite increased by 38.07 points to 14,070.87.

The Canadian dollar exchanged for 75.93 cents US, compared to 75.66 cents US on Friday.

The September crude oil contract rose by $1.56 to reach US$78.63 per barrel, while the September natural gas contract declined by two cents to reach US$2.69 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract fell by US$5.00 to reach US$1,961.60 per ounce, while the September copper contract increased by four cents to reach US$3.86 per pound.
