Energy and tech stocks drive S&P/TSX composite higher in late morning trading

Canada’s main stock index experienced a boost in late-morning trading, thanks to the strength of energy and technology stocks. This positive momentum was also reflected in the rise of U.S. stock markets.

The S&P/TSX composite index climbed 71.19 points to reach 20,361.60.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 13.71 points to 34,866.38. The S&P 500 index increased by 10.80 points to 4,508.43, while the Nasdaq composite grew by 53.63 points to 13,997.39.

The Canadian dollar traded at 73.93 cents US, compared to 73.57 cents US on Tuesday.

The October crude contract saw an increase of 27 cents to reach US$81.43 per barrel, while the October natural gas contract rose by eight cents to US$2.75 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract climbed by US$9.10 to US$1,974.20 an ounce, and the December copper contract grew by a penny to US$3.84 a pound.
