Ending the Coddling of Misbehaving Law Enforcement Officers

President Marcos has accepted the resignation of 18 senior officers from the Philippine National Police. These officers are described as “unscrupulous law enforcers” involved in the illegal drug trade. They were among 953 officers who went through a screening process conducted by an independent panel created by the National Police Commission (Napolcom) to investigate possible links between the police and illegal drug activities.

According to PNP Chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., the senior officers are being monitored closely and may face drug charges. They will be relieved from their positions, placed on floating status, and reassigned to the Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit of the PNP Directorate for Personnel and Records Management to prevent further illegal activities.

The President’s action sends a clear message that the government is committed to cleaning up the police force and holding those involved in corruption and illicit activities accountable. The public naming of the 18 resigned officers highlights the extent of corruption within the law enforcement body, with Brigadier Generals Remus Medina, Randy Peralta, and Pablo Labra II leading the list. It is commendable that their names have been disclosed, as it reveals the depth of corruption in the organization.

Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos, who initially hesitated to name the erring officers, was criticized for giving them a “graceful exit.” Critics questioned why the misdeeds of the police were not exposed and why they were treated differently from other drug offenders.

The involvement of these senior officers in the illegal drug trade is particularly troubling as they supposedly used their positions for personal gain. Medina and Peralta served as chiefs of the PNP’s primary anti-drug unit during the Duterte administration. They were previously implicated in supporting a dismissed officer involved in a drug raid where a large quantity of crystal meth was seized.

Olonan, another resigned officer, was charged along with 49 other PNP personnel for their alleged involvement in the same drug operation. Video footage revealed that several officers had taken a portion of the seized drugs as a “reward” for police informants.

The President’s uncompromising response to the scandalous misconduct of these officers marks a positive change from the previous administration’s leniency towards drug operatives. It is crucial that further efforts are made to cleanse the ranks of the police force, establish clearer guidelines, increase monitoring of police operations, and mandate the use of body cameras to ensure accountability.

A transparent investigation by the Napolcom, with public access to their reports, will help restore trust in the institution. It is important to encourage the public to report any suspicious police conduct through improved mechanisms.

Overall, it is essential to prosecute these law enforcers who have tarnished the reputation of the entire police force through their criminal actions.
