Aug. 3 (UPI) — An escaped emu, set loose in Indiana County, has finally been safely returned to its owner, much to the delight of the local community.

Sam Messmer, the proud owner of Messmer Farms in Linton, recounted the incident where Rigby, one of his emus, managed to escape his enclosure while Messmer was on a hiking trip.

Rigby’s escapade gained attention as he was spotted roaming around various locations across Greene County for a span of two weeks.

“He wandered all the way down the highway and even made it to Jasonville,” Messmer revealed in an interview with WTWO/WAWV. “He circled back a few times near here before venturing off towards Lone Tree, making his way through the woods, cornfields, and soybean fields.”

Determined to retrieve Rigby, Messmer and his friends devised several strategies and contraptions, utilizing traps and other methods. Ultimately, they were successful in coaxing Rigby back with a simple rope laid on the ground.

Rigby’s time on the loose made him quite the sensation within the local community. In fact, Messmer took advantage of the emu’s popularity and launched an Etsy shop, selling T-shirts bearing Rigby’s likeness.

Messmer plans to prevent any future escapes by installing a taller fence to secure Rigby’s enclosure.
